Japanese Glass | Suguru Iwasaka
Suguru Iwasaka was born in the Fukui prefecture. He studied Japanese traditional painting and basic techniques for glassmaking at Meisei University in Tokyo. After graduating, he decided to continue studying glass making at the Toyama Glass Institute. He then moved back to Fukui and worked for 10 years at the Ezra Glass Studio.
Iwasaka has been an independent glass artist since 2016 and is now based in Toyama, where he lives with his wife and fellow glass artist, Miya Kitamura.
His work has been widely exhibited at many galleries and events in Japan. In 2017, Iwasaka and his wife were commissioned to create a wall at the Toyama City Medical Association Nursing School.
Iwasaka says ‘I learnt a lot of techniques from my previous glass master Hiroshi Yamano at Ezra Glass and now I am very happy to be able to spend my whole time on my own glass work’.
